This is a vintage necklace of Japanese freshwater pearls.
Japan is famous for Akoya saltwater pearls, but also produces high quality freshwater pearls.
The freshwater pearls of this necklace have very good luster, similar to Akoya pearls. A necklace of Akoya pearls of the same size would be 10 times more expensive, and freshwater pearls are generally more durable than cultured saltwater pearls.
A necklace of good round freshwater pearls is difficult to distinguish from an Akoya pearl necklace.
Japan now has its first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, who was wearing a necklace of large freshwater pearls when she accepted her election as prime minister, so freshwater pearl necklaces are now attracting attention.
