This is vintage baby Akoya saltwater pearl necklace.
The thread of this necklace is still tight and clean like new.
Pearls under 5mm in size are called baby pearls, and it’s getting very difficult to find them these days. Today there is a large demand for baby pearls in Japan.
The reason why smaller pearls are difficult to find is that there are not many pearl farmers who produce them, and those that are produced mostly go to the large jewelry makers like Mikimoto.
I went to a Mikimoto salon some years ago and purchased a baby pearl necklace for myself. Mikimoto staff told me that baby pearl necklaces are very popular, and once they add one to a showcase it is sold right away. So they do not accept reservations for baby pearl necklaces.
This is not a Mikimoto necklace, but the quality is fine and the color and size are unified. The price is about one tenth of what Mikimoto charges for a similar necklace.
Baby pearl necklaces are very versatile. You can wear it as is, or you can use it like a chain necklace with pendants. Also you can wear it with gold chains etc. as layered necklaces.
You can use it with a pendant if it has a bail of at least 7mm diameter
